The Heavy Rigid class is easily the most popular course that students undertake when upgrading their licence. The Class (HR) can be undertaken by clients on their second year of Green P-Plates or a full unrestricted Class C (car) licence.

Obtaining the Automatic Class HR also allows you to drive any Light Rigid (LR) or Medium Rigid (MR) bus or truck.

There are a variety of gearbox types available –

Automatic / Synchromesh gearbox (Condition B) - One Day Course

A Synchromesh gearbox is the same type of gearbox that is fitted to a manual car. There is no need to 'double de-clutch'. An Automatic gearbox is exactly what you think - it has Reverse, Neutral and Drive with only an accelerator and brake pedal.

If you undertake the one-day course in the Automatic truck your licence will allow you to drive BOTH automatic and synchromesh gearbox. the only HR truck you will be unable to drive will be one with a 'Roadranger' (constantmesh) gearbox fitted.

As most manufacturers no longer make trucks with a Roadranger gearbox a ‘Condition B’ restriction is becoming less and less of a problem with each passing year. To clarify with an example, Mitsubishi trucks stopped producing vehicles with a Roadranger gearbox in 1998, therefore if you are working for a company with a vehicle fleet that is less than 10 years old, it is extremely unlikely that you will encounter a Roadranger gearbox.

Constantmesh or Roadranger gearbox - Two Day Course

Trucks fitted with a Roadranger gearbox tend to be either a heavier GVM or an older truck, this type of gearbox requires the driver to Double-decluch or “double-shuffle” when changing both up and down through the gears. For this reason it is imperative that the client must have current manual driving experience. This HR course is normally conducted over two days, as the level of skill required to master this type of gearbox is considerably higher than the Synchromesh or the Automatic gearboxes.

Successful completion of this course using our 18-Speed Roadranger truck, will result in the issue of an unrestricted Class HR licence, the Roadranger entitlement will remain with you even if you decide to upgrade to a higher class of licence using a vehicle with a Synchromesh or Automatic gearbox.
